Satao Elerai is situated in its own private wildlife conservancy between Mt. Kilimanjaro and the south eastern sector of the famous Amboseli National Park. Game drives can be taken in both the Elerai Conservation Area or Amboseli National Park which offers breathtaking views of Kenya, with the majestic snow capped Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain, providing the ideal backdrop for the ultimate safari experience. Within this critical network of protected and unprotected landscapes, Satao Elerai broadens the dedicated conservation area - forming the key to keeping wildlife habitats from fragmenting, whilst maintaining important wildlife corridors.
The camp can be reached from the main Amboseli NP airstrip, a 1 hour game drive away. The Tawi airstrip being much nearer is only a 30 minute drive. From Kimana Gate, driving takes about 30 minutes. From Nairobi the road journey to camp via Emali road takes approximately 4 hrs.
Satao Elerai ensures all its guests not only experience the perfect safari but also receive a level of comfort & luxury that is hard to find elsewhere in Africa. With unsurpassed views in every direction and a unique camp designed & built from local materials, where else can you wake up to the soft dawn light, illuminating Africa's rooftop, the majestic Mt Kilimanjaro.

Large balconies with relaxing day beds combine to offer the perfect place to lie as you take in the relaxing panorama around you. The elegantly furnished suite rooms have large sliding doors that open out onto your own private veranda, overlooking the plains below and Amboseli National Park. Elephants, giraffe and zebra are seen most days from the comfort of your room. Designed using natural rock and acacia wood, the bathrooms have their own naturally crafted bathtub and shower, unique to Elerai.
Our safari chefs provide the most sumptuous selection of cuisines to satisfy every taste with a choice of vegetarian dishes. The dining room looks out to Mt. Kilimanjaro to the South and down across the resident waterhole to the West, where guests can often enjoy their appetising lunch while watching the elephants bathe and drink. The camp waterhole receives regular visits from elephants, giraffes, lions, zebra, lesser kudu, eland as well as a host of other species. For those wishing to exercise or simply relax in the cool waters there is a swimming pool to wash away the safari dust.
Satao Elerai is fortunate enough to be located in one of the most diverse environments in Kenya. To explore the conservancy to its full potential we encourage guests to experience as many activities as possible. Our trained & experienced Kenya Professional Safari Guides (KPSGA) are on hand to help you experience the wildlife and culture of Elerai.
Satao Elerai offers game drives in the famous Amboseli National Park with the option of spending a full day, with a packed lunch provided or a half-day, returning to the lodge for lunch and relaxation or another activity of your choice. We also offer morning and afternoon game drives in our private Elerai conservancy off the beaten track away from other tourist vehicles. The Elerai Conservancy being part of the very important animal corridor between Amboseli National Park and Mt. Kilimanjaro has a good selection of large & small animals including elephant, giraffe, lion and cheetah.
The option of a night game drive is also available to our guests. Night game drives offer a whole different atmosphere and feel to the bush, guests are welcome to hold to spotlight and the chance to be the first to spot the nocturnal animals. During night drives one has the chance of seeing some rarely seen species such as the Civet, Serval & Genet cats, bushbabies, aardwolf and the elusive aardvark. As well as these more unusual species lions, elephants, giraffe and sometimes leopard are regularly seen.
For those who would like the opportunity to experience the bush away from the confinements of a safari vehicle and without the noise of the engine, our guided bush walks are an enlightening of seeing the African savannah from a different view point. Accompanied by one of our knowledgeable guides and two armed Maasai guards, guests learn about the smaller but no less interesting species of flora and fauna that make up our diverse eco-system. Guests can see tracks and signs of where animals have been, giving them an idea as to how Maasai and other tribes track the animals in the wild.
With so many activities to experience , sometimes it's preferable to just sit & relax with a fire burning, sipping on a delicious 'Dawa' cocktail or a glass of champagne and listening to the noises as the African dusk beckons. On our sundowner trips, guests are taken to a quite location in the middle of the African bush to watch the sun set over the plains & hills beyond.
Balloon safaris can be organised at Satao Elerai lodge with only a 30 minute drive to the take off point with very experienced pilots to give you an experience of a lifetime and another completely different and spectacular way to view Mt. Kilimanjaro and the African savannah below.
Around Satao Elerai camp over 200 species of birds have been spotted. With the waterhole and ponds around the lodge guests can relax in their own time and watch the weavers build their nests, as many different species of birds come and go.
Conservation Community & Culture
Satao Elerai can escort guests on a privileged visit to see one of the Elerai Maasai Community villages. The local community will perform traditional dances, show guests how to make fire the Maasai way, teach you how to use the local trees & plants for medicine and teach you about their way of life. The community Maasai village is a real traditional authentic Maasai village. They only allow Satao Elerai guests to visit on an invitation basis and so the experience offered is very much non-commercial and real.
Satao Elerai takes it's commitment to the environment seriously. By using renewable energy methods like solar and wind as well as energy saving light sources we aim to keep our footprint as small as possible. We also understand that the Amboseli Territory belongs to the legendary Maasai tribe of nomadic warriors. Elerai is part of the African Wildlife Foundation's Kilimanjaro Heartland, a vast transboundary landscape critical to the long term protection of Africa's wildlife, putting wildlife and land conservation to work for the people. The local community not only has an ownership stake in the lodge, but also had a hand in building it. With a single stay, you are channelling resources to wildlife conservation and contributing to the economic wellbeing of the people living in the larger Elerai area. Guests are helping to secure a legacy of conservation for a community, a continent, and a conservation minded world.
