Satao Camp is located in the heart of Tsavo East National Park. Over 30 km from the nearest flowing water source, Satao is an oasis where animals converge for their daily drink. For most months of the year elephants come in their hundreds to the Satao waterhole, making this one of Africa's premier Elephant viewing camps. The camp is also resident to a family of Genet Cats and over 100 impalas and waterbucks that have made the grounds their home. They literally walk within feet of you and your tent. The camp also has frequent visits from lion, cheetah, hyena, giraffe, buffalo and a diverse array of animals and birds. At Satao, you feel at one with your environment, being closer to nature than you'd imagined.
Satao Camp being in the heart of Tsavo East, is 47 km from the Buchuma Gate on the main Mombasa Road and 50 km from the Voi Gate. Driving from Mombasa to the camp takes just under 3 hrs.The Satao airstrip, 1 km from the camp receives both scheduled & charter flights.

Satao Camp is one of the few camps in Tsavo East National Park with open 4x4 vehicles and resident Kenya Professional Safari Guides who know and understand the whole ecosystem, making sure you have the best game viewing experience that Tsavo has to offer.
Nestled amongst Tamarind trees and surrounding a central water hole, the semi-circular layout of the camp provides an excellent viewing point for each of our guests. The accommodation consists of four luxury suites, one being a honeymoon and VIP suite with its own bath, six family tents and 10 standard tents, one of which is equipped for guests with disabilities. All tents have their own verandas, are luxuriously equipped with comfortable beds, own private bathroom and electricity. In true camping fashion hot water is delivered to your en-suite bathroom. Satao Camp takes you back to the original green canvas tents and 'Out of Africa' style shower buckets, evoking a feeling of the true authentic safari.
In the open plan dining room, our safari chefs provide the perfect selection of appetising cuisine to suit all palates, with a choice of vegetarian dishes always on offer. The dining room looks out over the resident waterhole, illuminated in the evenings so you observe the animals come and go as you enjoy your dinner. After dinner, watch the mesmerising stars as you relax around the glow of a safari style campfire.
Satao Camp offers game drives in the famous Tsavo East National Park. Game drive trails give clients the opportunity to explore the more common areas around Voi River and Aruba Dam, or to break away and visit the infrequently visited areas near Satao Camp where experiences with lions are quite common. Our safari vehicles are equipped with everything you need for perfect game viewing including binoculars, bird & animal books and cold boxes stocking refreshing cold drinks for the heat of the day. Tsavo is Kenya's Largest National Park covering an area of over 20,000 square kilometres, ensuring you will never run out of new areas to explore.
Day trip to Lugard's Falls
On request clients can book a full day game drive with picnic lunch to the Galana River and Lugard's Falls. Running along the edge of the Yatta Plateau, the world's largest lava flow, the Galana river bisects Tsavo East National Park. Lugard's Falls is remarkable as it is a series of rapids running between amazing different coloured rock formations.
Few places can offer the feeling of old Africa in quite the same way as Tsavo East. Sundowners at Satao Camp are an experience to be cherished. Early evening around a remote campfire looking onto the Sagala Hills as the sun slowly drops over the horizon behind an old Acacia tree cleanses the sole. A 'Dawa' cocktail or a glass ofchampagne, as you take in the noises of the African bush around you, is an experience to be treasured.
Around Satao Camp over 300 species of birds have been spotted. With our waterhole and bird baths around the lodge guests can walk around the grounds noting various species of hornbills, barbets, starlings, spurfowls, guineafowls, Oearl Spotted Owlets to name just a few.
Daphne Sheldrick Orphanage in Voi
Should clients request it in advance, we are able to arrange for visits to the Daphne Sheldrick Elephant stockade in Voi where the elephant orphans are kept during their rehabilitation back to the wild.
