Tips before your Departure
Germans and Austrians need a passport that has to be valid for at least 6 more months after leaving the country as well as a visa. You can apply for the visa about 3-6 weeks prior to your departure at the Embassy of Ethiopia for at the moment 34,- € plus postage. Alternatively you will receive it at the airport when entering the country for at the moment 50,- US$. With effect from 12th
June 2017, Visas can be applied for online before arrival to Ethiopian. You can apply for visa on the website https://www.evisa.gov.et/#/home
. The e-visa is processed and issued online on a single web page where applicants apply, pay and secure their entry visa online. Once the online application is approved, they will receive an email authorizing them to travel to Ethiopia and they will get their visa upon arrival in Addis Ababa. Children need their own passport document with photo.
Inhabitants of other countries should ask for their respective entry requirements at their responsible Embassy.
Besides sunscreen and your personal first-aid kit we recommend medicine for diarrhea due to the climatic change.
When entering Ethiopia through a country declared as yellow fever endemia area you need the certification of a valid yellow fever inoculation. Beyond that, no immunizations are required, but please ask your doctor or local health authority before departure.
In addition we suggest you invest in a travel health insurance, and will be happy to inform you about it.
Currency is the Ethiopian Birr.
There is a time shift of + 1 hour during European summer, in winter it is + 2 hours.
The different altitudes in Ethiopia are responsible for three different climate zone but in general the Ethiopian climate is moderate. Up to a height of 1000 meters there is humid or hot dry climate, from 1000 to 2500 meters the climate is moderate with pleasant average temperatures of 20-25° C and above 2500 meters it is very cold. Ethiopia has two rainy seasons, the longer one in the continentally effected months from June to September. Afterwards there is a longer dry period; the “little” rainy season follows from February to March.
Generally between-seasons clothes are appropriate. In higher areas you might need woolen clothes or a coat for the evenings.
Headgear as well as comfortable shoes is recommendable. Please also remember to take sunscreen and insect-repellant spray as well as rain shield for the rainy season.
Day of Departure
You will reach the most important airport of the country – Addis Abeba – several times a day from Frankfurt with Ethiopian Airlines or Lufthansa. From Vienna there is a direct flight with Austrian Airlines. Additionally there are several connecting flights, e.g. with Turkish Airlines or Emirates.
Within Ethiopia, Ethiopian Airlines is the only airline to fly to a total of 16 cities, sometimes several times a day.
We will be glad to advise you on prices for flights in Comfort/Business Class. For a fee of € 30, - we can reserve your preferred seat. We can also reserve a parking place at the airport in advance.
Please note that you have to be at the check-in counter of your airline at least two hours before your departure. We will be glad to send you some information on your airport. Please remember not to pack any sharp objects into your hand luggage like nail scissors etc.
Your travel destination
After arriving at your airport in Ethiopia you will be welcomed by your tour guide and accompanied to your hotel or you will directly start your round trip.
The official language of Ethiopia is Amharic. Additionally they speak several others Semitic or Cushitic languages. As languages of trade and/or education, also English, Italian, French and Arabic are quite common.
By land or by sea: The landscape and animal kingdom (especially under-water) of Mozambique have a lot to offer. We offer an interesting choice of round trips and excursions and will be glad to advise you. It is recommended to book before your departure as in the peak season many safari lodges are booked up and you may lose valuable vacation time.
Please deposit your money, jewellery as well as your documents in the hotel safe. Don't take too many things with you and take care of your handbag and camera. After sunset it is recommended to use a taxi instead of public means of transport.
It is strictly forbidden to take pictures of military and security relevant facilities (e.g. airport, stations, bridges, government buildings etc.) as well as military the police.
Without approval of the National Museum you are not allowed to export items that have art-history value (this applies to items that are older than 50 years but also for newer wood work, bibles, icons, crosses etc.). In order to avoid problems you should always ask for the approval of the National Museum if you have any doubts. There can also arise problems when exporting stones, plants or animal products (leather, feathers etc.).
The voltage is 220 Volt. Sometimes your well-established products might fit into the socket, but we recommend bringing a three-pole adapter.

Bring up invoices to a round figure, porters and guards will receive 5-10 Birr, maids 10-20 birr. To make sure that the maid will really receive the money, please give it to her personally and not only put it on the bedside table.
